The pulp and paper industry is the single largest consumer of water used in industrial activities in OECD countries and is the third greatest industrial greenhouse gas emitter, after the chemical and steel industries (OECD Environmental Outlook, p. 218)

Paper pulp exports from Latin America from forests converted into plantations and from the harvesting and conversion of tropical and subtropical forests are expected to grow 70 percent between 2000 and 2010. Our mission is to reduce the amount of recoverable paper that goes to landfill by progressively increasing the paper recover rate. We will do this by promoting the concept of reuse, deduce, recycle, recover by intensifying education and awareness campaigns to households, business and schools.

Some "Eye-Opening" Global Statistics
Paper is the number one material that is thrown away and for every 100 kg's of trash we throw away, 35 kg's is paper. As paper decomposes in landfills or is burned in incinerators, harmful chemicals from its inks and makeup are released into the environment.

Deforestation is occurring at an alarming rate worldwide, particularly in tropical regions. The World Resources Institute estimated in 1997 that only a fifth of the world's old-growth forests were undamaged, and almost half of these faced immediate threats from logging and development.
